The Art of Autumn Photography at the Swedish-Norwegian Border

Autumn is a magical season, and nowhere is its beauty more striking than along the Swedish-Norwegian border at Riksgränsen. This remote, mountainous region transforms into a stunning tapestry of golden birch trees, deep red tundra, and rugged peaks—a dream for photographers seeking dramatic landscapes and rich seasonal colors.

Capturing Autumn from Above
For this shoot, I chose aerial photography to fully embrace the grandeur of the autumn landscape. From above, the contrast between the warm autumn hues and the cool, rugged mountains becomes even more pronounced, creating a breathtaking composition that wouldn’t be possible from ground level.

Tips for Aerial Photography in Autumn
Golden Hour Matters Even More
Shooting early in the morning or late in the afternoon enhances the golden tones of autumn and creates softer shadows, adding depth to your images.

Find the Right Perspective
Instead of only shooting straight down, experiment with angled compositions to include both the vivid forest colors and the distant mountain range for a sense of scale.

Use a Polarizing Filter
A polarizer helps reduce glare from lakes and enhances the contrast between the sky, mountains, and autumn foliage, making colors pop.

Mind the Wind & Weather
Riksgränsen is known for unpredictable weather, so always check forecasts before launching a drone. Calm, clear days will give you the sharpest images.

Emphasize Leading Lines
Rivers, mountain ridges, or even winding roads can serve as natural leading lines, drawing the viewer’s eye through the image and adding a dynamic element to your composition.

Autumn at Riksgränsen is an experience unlike any other—a fleeting moment when nature is at its most vibrant. Whether you’re shooting from the ground or the air, it’s a season that demands to be captured.
