ITINERARY

Day 1: Welcome to Namibia – The Journey Begins
We recommend arriving one day before (Windhoek) the workshop offiially starts, as we embark on our adventure early on Day 1.

Your journey begins in Windhoek, where you’ll be greeted by our team before setting off on a scenic drive north to Oshikango, a small town near the Angolan border. As you travel through Namibia’s vast open landscapes, you’ll experience the first taste of the raw beauty that awaits—rolling grasslands, acacia-dotted plains, and glimpses of traditional rural life.

Upon arrival, you’ll settle into our Lodge, a comfortable retreat featuring lush gardens, a refreshing swimming pool, and a cozy on-site restaurant. This is the perfect place to relax and refresh before crossing into Angola the next morning.

In the evening, join Christian Nørgaard and your fellow photographers for a welcome dinner and expedition briefing, where Christian will introduce the key themes of the workshop and how to capture authentic portraits in challenging and dynamic environments.

After an evening of inspiration and preparation, we’ll head to bed early—ready for the adventure ahead.

Day 2: Entering Angola – First Tribal Encounters
The journey into the heart of Angola begins! We start the day early, heading toward the border crossing, where the morning light paints a vibrant scene of local merchants and traders setting up their market stalls—a perfect opportunity for dynamic street photography.

As we navigate border formalities, which can take anywhere from 30 minutes to three hours, photographers will have ample time to capture the raw energy of this frontier town.

Once across the border, the vast Angolan landscape unfolds before us—open savannahs dotted with acacia trees and nomadic settlements. These remote lands offer a glimpse into a world untouched by modernity, where tradition and nature exist in harmony.

By afternoon, we reach Cahama, where we set up our first wild camp near a local village. Here, an extraordinary photographic experience awaits: capturing intimate portraits of elders and children in their natural environment. Learn how to master natural light as Christian shares his expertise in crafting stunning, evocative imagery.

As the sun begins to set, we embrace the golden hour with a special sunset shoot, highlighting the breathtaking landscapes and cultural richness of the region. The day concludes with an open-fire dinner under the vast Angolan sky—a moment to reflect, share stories, and immerse ourselves in this unforgettable experience.

Days 3-4: Oncocua – Immersed in Tribal Culture
The journey deepens as we venture into Kunene Province, where the Himba, Mucubal, and Muhimba tribes offer a rare and intimate glimpse into their way of life.

We begin with a morning photography session in Cahama, capturing villagers as they start their day—gathering water, tending to livestock, and engaging in daily rituals. This is a chance to develop candid storytelling skills, allowing participants to document authentic moments in a respectful, documentary style.

From there, we embark on a scenic 4×4 drive into the heart of Angola, where the landscape transforms into rolling hills, dry riverbeds, and striking rock formations. Upon arrival in Oncocua, one of the most remote settlements in the country, we set up camp for two nights—ensuring unparalleled access to the region’s diverse tribes.

Evening workshop’s with Christian:

  • Understanding tribal customs to create meaningful and respectful portraits.
  • Mastering composition in environmental portraiture.
  • Exploring night photography, using firelight and starlight to craft cinematic images.

On Day 4, we immerse ourselves in a full-day cultural experience, spending time with local tribes to build trust and create intimate, expressive portraits. Expect stunning close-up photography, focusing on the intricate details of wrinkles, adornments, and gestures that tell deeper stories.

We visit a Himba family, documenting their daily routines, traditional dress, and spiritual practices—an extraordinary opportunity to witness and photograph centuries-old traditions.

Day 5: Colinas Canyons – A Photographer’s Paradise
We shift gears as we leave the tribal lands behind and journey toward the breathtaking Colinas Canyons, a hidden gem in the Desert. Along the way, we capture nomadic herders moving with their cattle, experimenting with motion blur and dynamic compositions.

As golden hour approaches, the red sandstone formations of Colinas Canyons come alive with warm hues—offering a dreamlike setting for landscape photography.

Sunset Shoot & Astrophotography Workshop:

  • Exposing for the Milky Way in one of Africa’s darkest skies.

This is a night where the sky itself becomes the subject of our art.

Days 6-7: Virei – The Hidden World of the Mucubal Tribe
We travel deeper into the desert, entering the isolated world of the Mucubal tribe—one of Angola’s most visually striking communities. Over two days, we focus on capturing:

  • The intricate hairstyles and elaborate jewelry of Mucubal women.
  • Cattle herding traditions and desert survival techniques.
  • Children playing in the sand dunes, their laughter and movement telling powerful visual stories.

Christian provides on-location guidance, helping participants create:

  • Powerful black & white portraits, emphasizing emotion and character.
  • High-contrast storytelling, using texture and shadows to create timeless images.

This is an opportunity to go beyond photography—it’s about cultural connection, patience, and the art of visual storytelling.

Days 8-10: Lubango – The Road to the Mountains
Our journey continues toward Lubango, Angola’s highland city, famous for its Portuguese colonial architecture and stunning natural landscapes.

One of the highlights is a 4×4 ascent of the legendary Serra da Leba Pass—a winding, mountainous road with awe-inspiring panoramic views. This dramatic setting offers breathtaking opportunities for landscape and aerial photography.

In Lubango, we explore the city’s bustling markets, historic streets, and local culture, blending urban documentary photography with portraiture and street scenes.

We conclude with a final image review & critique session, where Christian provides tailored feedback, helping participants refine their best images from the journey.

Days 11: Scenic Return to Windhoek
As we begin our journey back to Windhoek, we take time to appreciate the diverse landscapes we traverse—from the dramatic highlands of Lubango to the vast, open plains of Namibia. Along the way, there will be opportunities for spontaneous roadside photography, capturing the changing terrain, scattered wildlife, and remnants of colonial-era settlements.

Once we arrive in Windhoek, we check into the elegant Weinberg Windhoek, a refined retreat that offers a perfect blend of luxury and relaxation. These final days are dedicated to unwinding and reflecting on our incredible journey.

We end the night and workshop wit a Farewell Dinner.

Days 12: Home sweet home
Our journey ends with a transfer to Windhoek Airport, but the memories—and the images—will last a lifetime.
